What is Age of Conan?
Age of Conan is a massively multiplayer online action RPG based on REH's Conan novels.
When will the game be released?
Age of Conan is scheduled to be released for the PC in Q4 2006 and sometime in 2007 for consoles. As Age of Conan is a showcase game for Windows Vista (and Funcom has announced the signing of a development and marketing agreement with Microsoft) it seems likely that the game is being developed for the XBox 360.
Which operating systems will the game run on?
Age of Conan will run on XP or Vista. As part of a development agreement with Microsoft, Funcom will work to optimize the game for the Windows Vista operating system.
What will the system requirements be? Will I need a graphics card with a physics accelerator in order to play?
Funcom will release information on minimum system requirements closer to launch. The game will not require a physics accelerator.
When is the beta?
Beta will begin in early summer. Funcom has said that the one thing players can do to give themselves a better chance of getting in on the beta is to sign up on the official forums and the newsletter. The date that players signed up will not be the only consideration, but the length of time they have been a part of the community will carry weight in the process of handing out beta invitations.
What are some of the features Age of Conan has to offer?
Age of Conan uses a new style of combat called Real Combat which allows you to determine where you attack based on six different attack directions.
In addition to real combat Age of Conan has different types of formation combat which gives bonuses to all who participate in the formation.
A wide variety of PVP including massive sieges, team battles, and drunken bar fights. Many fans are also hoping for a full FFA PVP server.
Age of Conan also changes the way magic is used by weaving spells together to result in a powerful magical attack (or, perhaps, an explosion of magic on the caster if the spell fails).
How does the single player portion of the game work?
The first 20 levels of the game will be played just like a single player title. You develop your character through a in depth storyline that happens in the Barachan Isles. At level five you select your archetype Soldier, Rogue, Priest or Mage and at level 20 you select your class. In these first 20 (of 80) levels you have a dark, sinister story to unravel where you are part of a larger picture where your fate is bound tightly to that of King Conan in Aquilonia.
Players will be connected to Funcom’s servers during the entire game to provide protection against cheating and hacking and also prevent any form of pirating of the game.
Will I have to pay a monthly subscription fee to play? How much will the monthly subscription cost?
There will be no subscription fees payable until a player begins the multiplayer portion of the game after level 20. Details on pricing will be released coloser to launch.
How long is the single player portion? Can I skip it and go straight to the multiplayer part?
The single player portion will take approximately 10-15 hours to complete although you can replay it with each of the four archetypes. It is intended to be a complete stand-alone game. You can not skip the single player portion your first time through. However, experienced players will be able to skip the single-player portion and start at level 10 in their home country.
How is death handled in this game?
In this game you will not lose any experience from death but will suffer a temporary debuff and you may have weapon/armor damage. Also death is different for PVP and PVE.
Is the game skill based or level based?
The game is based around a level progression, as you grow stronger more adventures will open up to you, and you will be able to take part in epic battles with other players in many diverse regions of Hyboria. With that being said skill in how you fight will play a big role in the game and although a level 20 could not take a level 80, players may be able to beat other players a few levels above them.
Is this just another hack 'n slash/fire ball type game?
No, the game is much more complex than that. In addition to the signature technical improvements, Real Combat and weaving there are also special moves and combos to spice up the battles. Also if magic and swords don't interest you there is ranged combat for those who love distance weapons. Also different skills will allow customization in characterization and play style.
What races will we be able to play?
You will be able to choose from Aquilonian, Cimmerian or Stygian. Each race is limited to a selection of basic archetypes.
What classes will we be able to play?
When you begin the game you are a commoner without a class or archetype. At level five you select your basic archetype. The archetypes available are priest, soldier, rogue, and mage. When you reach level 20 you select your specialized class.
Can I customize my character?
All three in game races and both genders will have a multitude of options available for customization. Players can select the color of their skin, scale many parts of your body (chest, shoulders, legs, etc.), add scarring, tattoos, body jewelry and alter their face by changing the appearance of your features. Players will have the option to use more than 40 different sliders and buttons to manipulate their appearance. Additionally, players can scale many portions of their character's body including arms, calves, arse and breast size (for females).
Player characters can also get battle scars and tattoos during game play that will further help make each player appear unique.
Will there be multiple servers and how large will they be?
Yes, there will be multiple servers including servers with different PvE and PvP rulesets, precisely what rulesets will be available has not yet been decided. There will be, on average, between 1500 and 2500 simultaneous players logged onto the servers at one time with a peak of around 4000 players.
How large is the game world?
The game world is comprised of 35+ regions ranging from 1x1 to 4x4 km. These regions were selected because of their importance or relevance to the country or what Conan did there. Additionally, there will be almost 50 dungeons for players to explore.
Is there player crafting?
Yes, there are different prestige classes in the game that allow the player to take part in crafting.
Is there player housing?
Housing is available in two fashions in the game. There is player housing in the Border Kingdoms which are PVP enabled and can be the target of massive sieges. There is also player housing in the resource and building areas which are only attacked by other NPCs. You must be in a guild to participate in many features involving player cities.
