Gaming Abbrevations

Newcomers to the MMORPG scene can often sit at their computers totally baffled by what they are reading on screen. The conversations people around them are having, just make no sense at all.
Gamers create their own abbreviations to help save time when typing, more games mean more abbreviations, and the whole thing can get very confusing.

Here is a list of general gaming abbreviations to try and help you figure things out.

AFAIK

As far as I know

AFK	Away from keyboard

Aggro

To gain aggro means get the monsters attention, and damage is all aimed at you

Alt	Alternate character

AO	Anarchy Online - A popular Sci-fi themed MMORPG

AoE	Area of Effect - A type of attack that damages multiple monsters at once (i.e. Fireball)

BBL	Be back later

Boyfriend

Bio Break

Bathroom break

BRB	Be right back

BRT	Be right there

BTW	By the way

Buff	A spell or power in one form or another that increases the abilities of a character

Carebear

Derogatory term for people who don't like PvP

CC	Crowd control (immobilizing, holding, sleeping extra enemies)

CoH	City of Heroes - A Hero themed MMORPG

DAoC	Dark Age of Camelot - A medieval themed MMORPG

Debuff

A spell or power in one form or another that decreases the abilities of an opponent

Ding	(Mostly from EQ players) Indicates that a character has leveled

DoT	Damage over Time - A type of attack that damages an opponent constantly over a period of time

DPS	Damage per second

EQ	EverQuest - A typical Dungeons & Dragons type MMORPG

Exp or Xp

Experience

FFS	For f**k’s sake (not all gamers are polite)

Flame

To insult or ridicule someone in a harsh manner

Fotm	Flavour of the month (a popular character build)

G2G or GTG

Good to go

GF	Girlfriend

Grats or Gratz

Congratulations (usually on leveling)

Griefer

A player who seems to derive enjoyment from lowering the enjoyment of others

GTT	Going to train - Going to level your character up

Hate

Hold aggro

Keeping the focus of an opponent on yourself and away from your teammates

HUD	Heads up display

IDK	I don’t know

IIRC	If I recall correctly

IMHO	In my humble (or honest) opinion

IMO	In my opinion

Inc	Incoming monsters

INV	A request, meaning, “Please invite me to join your team”

IYKWIM

If you know what I mean

JOO	Pronounced “Jew”, but not meant as a racial slur or derogatory comment; commonly used in place of “you.”

Kill Steal

To defeat an opponent that was engaged by another player, without first obtaining that player’s permission

Kite	To run around holding the attention of a mob by staying out of melee range and using ranged attacks

KK	Ok or Okie Dokie

L33T	The common term for the abbreviation and butchering of the English language by a number of on-line gamers (who knows why). l33t uses many numbers and symbols in it and commonly replaces the letter s with the letter z

LFT or LFG

Looking for team (group)

Loot	In game items that are considered nice

LOL	Laughing out loud

LVL

Level

Main	A player's primary character; that is, the character the player plays most of the time. Almost always the highest level character on an account

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game

Mob	An in game, computer controlled character, short for "mobile object". Usualy a monster

N00B	A derogatory term for a player new to a game

Someone new to the game

NFI	No f**king idea

NP	No problem

NPC	Non Player Character - An in game, computer controlled character, usualy a helpful character

Nuke	Damage ability or powerful main attack

On my way

OOE	Out of Endurance

Own	To lay waste to an enemy or having your butt kicked

PBAoE

Point blank area of effect

PC	Player Character or Personal Computer

Perma

Permanent

PK	Player Killer

PL	Power Level. To level as quickly as possible, with outside assistance

PLZ

Please

PPL

People

Pull	To hit a specific opponent, in order to begin combat with either just it, or it and a group of opponents near it

PvE	Player versus Environment (Computer controlled opponents)

PvP	Player versus Player

Rez	To resurrect or revive a player

RL	Real life, as in, the life you live in the real world

ROFL	Rolling on the floor laughing

ROFLMAO

Rolling on the floor laughing my a$$ off

WoW	World of Warcraft

CTD	Crash to Desktop

QTF	Quoted for truth.

SWG	Star Wars Galaxies - You don't even need to ask about this one.

OP	Original Poster, a term used in forums.
